Designing Tasks

Dear students,

the next step in your project is to create tasks. You should consider task criteria that are summarized here.

The tasks should be made for the learners and give clear instructions to what they have to do (task as workplan).

They should contain the following information for the learners:

Purpose: Why do the learners have to do the task?

Product: What is the outcome the learners are working on?

Procedure: What are the steps in the task as workplan?

Put the tasks either in a new ‘Class blog’ or ‘Class wiki’.

Designing a Project Outline

Dear students,

today you will design an outline for a Web 2.0 project in a classroom. You can use textbooks and the Bildungsplan (google ‘Bildungsstandards Baden-Württemberg) to get ideas for a certain grade. Please keep in mind that you have to follow the curriculum standards and later on you will have to define which standards and competences you want to achieve.

And this is how you have to do it:

Designing a project plan

The project plan should be at least one DINA4 page. The plan should contain the following information:

General information about the project:

grade, age, background (e.g. countries), … of the learners
topic and time frame
what kind of collaboration?

Purpose of the project:

why are you doing the proejct?
what is the content and why is it relevant for the learners?
which skills will the learners develop? (Please specify the standards taken from the Bildungsplan BW)
which aspects of ICC will be developed?

Product of the project:

what is/are the product/s of the projects?
what relevance does/do the product/s have for the learners?
how will the products be presented?

Procedure of the project:

give a rough outline of the four stages of the project:
preliminary stage,
implementation stage
and final stage (see Micall chapter for clarification)

Create a new wiki and post the project plan on one page. The wiki will be your own project wiki.

Network-based language teaching

In today’s session we will look at how the web 2.0 can be used for language teaching. We will explore different approaches to CALL (computer-assisted language learning) and discuss how tasks can be designed.

Your task:

Kern and Warschauer (2000) write about how CALL has mad a shift from a structural to sociocognitive approach to language learning.

Read the article for skimming (only try to find the main ideas). And answer the following questions in a new blog entry:

What are the main ideas of the structural, cognitive and sociocognitive perspective to language learning?
What is the role of the computer in each of these approaches?
Which of these approaches in your opinion can be best used with the web 2.0?

Copyright on the Web 2.0 is an important topic when you want your students to create products with a variery of media. Basically, everything someone puts on the net is protected by the copyright of its creator. However, there is a lot of good material which is open content, meaning anybody can use it.

The non-profit organisation creative commons provides the possibility of labelling open content material.

Your Task:

Explore the site creative commons and find out the search possibilities for open content
Update your weblog with free content pictures or other material. The pictures should in some (creative) way support the content of your posts.

Dear students,

you will be assigned to tasks for today:

Write posts on your blog about your experience with working with wikis. Some already wrote about it, but many didn’t write much so far. Please consider the following aspects:
- what is your personal experience in collaborating with wikis?
- how would you use wikis for language teaching
Subscribe to the class blogs in Google Reader
- go to google reader and sign up (if you haven’t got a google account, you have to create one)
- subscribe to the class blogs (you can find them here on the seminar blog)
Read the blogs in your reader and write comments on at least 4 blogs

Write a post in your blog: What new aspects have you learned about using web 2.0 tools? How could this help you as a language teacher? Which of the researched sites did you like most and why did you like it most?

What is new about the Web 2.0?

Dear class,

welcome on my class blog for the web 2.0 seminar SS08. In the seminar we will explore how we can use tools of the Web 2.0 for the TEFL classroom. The phrase web 2.0 is a controversial one, because some people doubt that the web 2.0 is something new after all. This leads us to the question: what is really new about the web 2.0? Tim O’Reilly, who is one of the pioneers of the web 2.0, wrote a milestone article about the web 2.0 and how it changed the internet.

Your task:
Read the article and contribute to the wiki http://new-web-two.wetpaint.com/page/What+is+new+about+the+web+2.0%3F. Each of you has to contribute a part and it has to be something that really adds new content to the wiki. Better start on the empty paper, because then you can decide what you want to add.

The basic question which should be answered in the wiki is ‘what is new about the web 2.0?’.

Of course you can use other sources, too. Please quote the source when it is not related to O’Reilly.
